Well-preserved Tenor banjo from the 1970s made by the Lida factory in Japan.
Masterclone banjo built in the style of a 1920s Gibson. Flathead tonering, new transparent 11″ Remo head, planetary tuners and Clamshell tailpiece. Labeled inside the pot.
Length 91cm, scale 58,8cm, nut width 29mm
Minimal signs of use and age like tiny scratches or slightly rubbed parts.
This instrument sounds like the most Masterclones: loud, clear, powerful. Irish setup with Deering strings in GDAE (2nd wound).
Here something interesting about the history of the GTR brand (source: https://hawthorne.fastie.com/asianbanjos/gk.php):
Japanese masterclone: first offered in 1974 they were sold through approximately 1978. They were made for GTR by Iida. GTR stands for George Gruhn, Tut Taylor and Randy Wood, three dealers/ builders in the Nashville scene in the mid 70’s. They were available in one finish only, dark mahogany, with 2 piece flange and flat head tone ring. There were “a few hundred” of them made, but Gruhn has said he doesn’t remember exactly how many.
The models/inlays available were:
- #1 (H&F, fiddle peghead),
- #2 (Florentine Special, fiddle),
- #3 (Wreath, fiddle),
- #4 (Reno, double cut).
